Today is a
public holiday, commemorating the birth in 1806 of Benito Juarez, President of
Mexico from 1858 until his death in 1872. Trained as a
lawyer, he led the government during historically significant events
including the Reform War, the French Intervention, the Second Empire and the
republic’s restoration. At 4ft 6ins he was also one of the shortest presidents in world history. Abe Lincoln was the tallest US president at 6ft 4ins (taller than Obama at 6ft 1in). But they're both left behind by the world's current tallest head of state, Montenegro's Filip Vijanovic at 6ft 5in, who doesn't need a bodyguard.
