Steve Coe RIP

Talking of doom, just learned that songwriter, musician & producer Steve Coe died yesterday aged 62. He wasn't a big name but behind the scenes he helped usher in the whole world music genre, at least in Britain. In the 70s he learned his craft before co-forming the short-lived but wonderful Indipop group, Monsoon, whose 'Ever So Lonely' single was a surprise hit in 1982. Coe married the group's singer, Sheila Chandra, and produced all her subsequent solo albums, some of which were on Peter Gabriel's Real World. I met him a couple of times with Sheila in the mid-80s: a protective, guiding (and clearly smitten) force.
